Filter Preparation and Maintenance
For best results, soak the filter for one hour in a special solution before use:
- Warm water
- Citric acid (20 g/l)
- Potassium metabisulfite (3 g/l)
After soaking, rinse the filter thoroughly with clean water. To extend the filter's lifespan, avoid using fragrant detergents when washing. With proper maintenance, the filter is reusable and maintains its filtering properties.

Why does the filter need soaking before its first use?
New cotton cloth is soaked for about an hour in a solution of warm water, citric acid (20 g/l) and potassium metabisulfite (3 g/l) and then rinsed. This conditions and sanitises the fabric so it does not impart off-flavours and filters cleanly from the first batch.
Why avoid scented detergents when washing it?
Fragranced detergents leave residues in the cotton that can transfer aromas into the wine. Washing without scented products keeps the filter neutral, protecting the clean taste of the next batch.
What does it actually remove from the wine?
It is designed to catch sediment, lees and fermentation residues, clarifying cloudy wine. It is a clarifying cloth filter rather than a sterile or fine-membrane filter, so it polishes appearance rather than removing micro-organisms.
