Replacement frequency depends on usage intensity and the type of liquid being pumped. For typical winery use (seasonal pumping during harvest and racking), the impeller can last 2–3 seasons. Signs of wear include reduced flow rate, unusual vibration, or visible deformation of the blades. Inspect the impeller before each season and replace if you notice any cracking or significant softening of the rubber.

What is EPDM and is it food-safe for wine and beer transfer?

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber that is widely approved for food-contact applications. It is resistant to hot water, steam, and many food-grade cleaning chemicals. EPDM is suitable for transferring wine, beer, fruit juices, and other food liquids. It does not impart taste or odour to the product being pumped, making it ideal for beverage transfer.

Can I use this EPDM impeller for pumping spirits or high-alcohol liquids?

EPDM is not recommended for use with spirits, high-alcohol solutions, or petroleum-based products, as these can cause the rubber to swell and degrade. For pumping spirits or liquids above 15% alcohol, a NBR (nitrile rubber) impeller is the better choice. Contact FERMETECH to check if a NBR version is available for your FLEXI 50 pump model.

How do I correctly install the replacement impeller?

Disconnect the pump from power before starting. Remove the pump cover, then carefully pull out the old impeller from the stainless steel bush. Note the rotation direction before removal. Lubricate the new impeller lightly with food-grade lubricant or a small amount of the liquid you will be pumping. Slide it onto the shaft, ensuring it seats fully in the bush (hole 22mm, length 71mm). Reassemble the cover and test with water before pumping product.
