How do I attach an airlock to this bung?
The 9 mm central hole is sized to take the stem of a standard fermentation airlock. Push the airlock stem gently through until it sits snugly; the tight fit itself forms the seal, so no separate gasket is needed.
Why is the bung conical rather than straight-sided?
The tapered 17–22 mm profile lets a single bung fit a range of neck diameters. You press it in until the cone wedges tight, so one size can seal many different demijohns, carboys and fermenters.
How should I clean and sanitise it between batches?
Wash it in warm water with a little unscented detergent, rinse well, then sanitise with a no-rinse fermentation sanitiser before each use. Avoid abrasive scourers so the sealing surface stays smooth and airtight.
How does it protect the fermenting beverage?
Once the bung is wedged in and the airlock is filled with liquid, gas from fermentation can bubble out while outside air and airborne microbes cannot get in, protecting your wine, cider or beer from oxidation and spoilage.
