What does this 3-scale hydrometer measure?
It reads liquid density (0.990–1.150 SG), sugar content (0–360 g/l) and potential alcohol (0–20% vol) on three colour scales. That covers what a home wine, cider, beer or honey maker needs from one instrument.
How does it work and what else do I need?
It works by Archimedes' principle: it floats in the liquid and you read the value where the surface crosses the scale. You need a 200 ml measuring cylinder to float it cleanly in a representative sample.
How do I use it to follow fermentation?
Take a reading before fermentation and again at the end; the fall in sugar and density shows how much has converted and indicates the alcohol produced. Comparing the two readings is how you judge whether fermentation is complete.
How do I handle and store it?
It is a glass instrument, so handle it gently and rinse and dry it after each use. Store it in its tube or padded so the stem and scale are protected from knocks.
