Frequently asked questions about this product
What does an airlock actually do during fermentation?
It lets the carbon dioxide produced by fermentation escape while blocking outside air and microorganisms. This protects the wine or juice from oxidation and contamination.
How do I fit it correctly?
It seats in a 17 mm opening, typically through a bung in the barrel or vessel. Make sure the bung seals tightly so gas leaves only through the airlock and not around the edges.
How is it maintained?
Clean it between batches and keep it filled to the correct liquid level so gas can bubble through. A dry or dirty airlock cannot form the protective barrier.
When should I check it during fermentation?
Watch the bubbling rate. Frequent bubbling signals active fermentation, while slowing or stopped bubbling suggests fermentation is finishing, prompting you to check the gravity before the next step.
