    How do you prepare a new cotton filter before first use?

    Rinse a new cotton filter in clean warm water to remove loose fibres and any milling dust before filtering food liquids; this keeps fibres and a "cottony" taste out of the first batch.

    How should the filter be cleaned so it stays reusable?

    Rinse it immediately after use before residues dry, wash it in hot water without strong scented detergents that the cotton can retain, and let it dry fully; storing it damp encourages mould that ruins the fabric.

    Does the same filter suit wine, beer and oil equally?

    The cotton cone handles each of these, but oils and strongly coloured or aromatic liquids can leave traces in the weave, so it is best to keep one filter for oil and another for beverages to avoid carrying over flavours.

    How can you get clearer results when filtering?
