Frequently asked questions about 005.054.2
What is kieselsol and how does it work?
Kieselsol is a colloidal silicic acid solution that has a negative electrical charge. When combined with positively charged gelatin, the particles bind together and carry the clouding compounds to the bottom of the glass, resulting in a clear and sparkling wine or juice.
Why do silicic acid and gelatin need to be added separately?
The two substances react immediately upon contact. If they are mixed directly, clumps will form before the mixture can be dispersed in the wine, reducing the effectiveness of clarification. Add the silicic acid first, mix gently, then add the dissolved gelatin to achieve a uniform reaction.
How much wine can be explained in a 1 L bottle?
With a standard dose of 5 ml per 10 liters, a 1 L bottle is enough to process approximately 2,000 liters of wine or juice. The exact amount depends on the degree of turbidity — more turbid liquids may require the upper end of the 2.5-5 ml range.
Is kieselsol safe and does it leave any residue?
Yes, kieselsol is a food-safe clarifying agent that is also widely used in industrial wine production. After clarifying, the precipitate settles to the bottom of the vessel and is removed during decanting — there is no taste, aroma or noticeable residue left in the finished wine.
How long does the explanation take?
Visible clearing usually begins within 24 hours and complete clearing is generally achieved in 5-10 days at cool temperatures (10-15°C). Then pour the wine from the sediment into a clean container.
