What is the 9 mm hole for?
It accepts the stem of a standard airlock (bubbler), so the bung seals the bottle or vessel while letting fermentation CO2 escape without letting air or contaminants back in.
How does the conical (tapered) shape help?
The taper, sized from 14 mm at the narrow end to 18 mm at the wide end, lets one bung fit a range of neck openings by pushing in to the depth that seals, which is handy across slightly different bottles.
How do you fit and remove it without damage?
Moisten the neck slightly and press the bung in with a gentle twist; remove it by twisting rather than yanking, to preserve its shape and sealing surface.
How should it be cleaned and stored?
Wash it in warm water and sanitize before each use, rinse off any sugary residue that attracts spoilage, and store it clean and dry away from direct heat so it keeps its elasticity.
