      Using the Oechsle Scale

The Oechsle measuring scale is widely used in Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg for determining must sweetness. Developed by Ferdinand Oechsle in the 1820s, the method is based on liquid density at 20°C. The measurement shows how much the must density exceeds pure water density (1.0000 kg/dm³).

    • Frequently asked questions about VCP0043

      How to calibrate a refractometer?

Calibration is easy: put a few drops of distilled water on the prism, close the lid and check that the reading is 0 on the Brix scale at 20°C. If not, use the supplied calibration screwdriver to adjust the set screw until zero is achieved. Calibrate before each measurement session for best accuracy.

What is the difference between the Oechsle, Brix and KMW scales?

All three scales measure sugar content, but use different systems. Brix (0-32%) shows sugar as a percentage by mass and is an international standard. Oechsle (0-170°Oe) indicates the density of wort relative to water and is used in Germany and Switzerland. KMW (Babo) is used in Austria and measures sugar in kg per 100 kg of wort.

How does Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) work?

The ATC system automatically corrects readings for samples between 10°C and 30°C, eliminating the need for manual temperature calculations. This ensures consistent and accurate results regardless of ambient conditions, making the instrument reliable both in the basement and outdoors.

Can this refractometer be used for fermented wine?

No. Refractometers are designed to measure sugar content in unfermented wort or juice. If alcohol has already formed, it will distort the refractive index and give inaccurate results. For fermented wine, use an areometer or a special correction formula.

How to clean and maintain a refractometer?

After each use, rinse the prism with distilled water and dry carefully with the included soft cleaning cloth. Never use abrasive materials or strong chemicals. Keep the instrument in a protective case to avoid scratches and impacts. Calibrate periodically to ensure measurement accuracy.
