    • Hydrometer 3-scale

Usage: An absolute must have for any brewer, amateur to professional. Nothing can match the accuracy and simplicity of a trusted hydrometer.

Features: A hydrometer measures the density or specific gravity of a liquid. Used to give a reading to the gravity of your wort. Suspend the hydrometer in a sample of your wort to get the reading in one of our 250mL glass cylinders or our 100mL plastic cylinder.

Technical data: To calculate your % Alcohol By Volume: (OG - FG) x 131.25 = ABV %. Where OG is your Original Gravity e.g. 1.050 as shown by your hydrometer before you pitch your yeast, and FG "Final Gravity" e.g. 1.010 as shown by the hydrometer after it has fermented. Example: (1.050 - 1.010) * 131.25 = 5.25% ABV

    • Frequently asked questions about this product

What does a hydrometer actually measure?

It measures the density (specific gravity) of a liquid. You suspend it in a sample of your wort or must, and the depth it floats to gives the gravity reading.

How do I work out the alcohol from the readings?

Use the formula (OG − FG) × 131.25 = ABV%. OG is the original gravity read before you pitch the yeast and FG is the final gravity read once fermentation is finished.

Which container should I use for the reading?

Float it in a tall, narrow sample cylinder (for example a 250 mL glass or 100 mL plastic cylinder) so it hangs freely without touching the sides or bottom.

Why take both an original and a final reading?

The fall from OG to FG shows how much sugar the yeast has converted, which the ABV formula needs. Stable readings over a few days also tell you fermentation has finished.
