Why is this called a nipple, and what does it connect?
A nipple is a short fitting with an external (male) thread on both ends, so it joins two parts that each have an internal (female) thread. It effectively bridges or extends two threaded ports.
What is the hexagonal centre section for?
The six flat faces give a spanner or wrench a secure grip, so you can tighten the nipple firmly into both fittings without the tool slipping.
Can I screw this BSP nipple into an NPT fitting?
No. BSP and NPT threads have different forms and angles. Combining them tends to cross-thread and leak, so pair this fitting only with matching BSP parts.
How do I avoid damaging the threads when fitting it?
Start each connection by hand so the threads seat straight, then tighten with a wrench without over-torquing. The stainless body resists corrosion, but cross-threading is the most common way these are ruined.
