Frequently asked questions about this product
What can a demijohn like this be used for?
It is suited to fermenting small batches and to storing or maturing low wines and finished spirits such as grappa, wine and port, and it can also be used for macerating fruit or botanicals.
Why should boiling water never be followed by ice-cold water in this vessel?
This is ordinary soda-lime glass, not borosilicate, so a sudden swing from very hot to very cold causes thermal shock that can crack or shatter it. Always change temperatures gradually.
How should it be cleaned and sanitised before use?
Wash it with warm rather than boiling water and a suitable cleaner, rinse well, and then use a no-rinse brewing sanitiser. A bottle brush or a soak helps reach residue through the narrow neck.
Why is glass preferred for the long-term storage of spirits and wine?
Glass is non-porous and chemically inert, so it does not absorb flavours or let oxygen through the wall, which helps preserve aroma and character during extended storage.
