Description
Flask 5000ml Erlenmeyer borosilicate glass
Usage: Ideal for large yeast starters using stir plates. Propagating yeast can take your beer to the next level, ensuring flavourful characters from the yeast. Instead of stressed out flavours that can occur when under pitching. If you are fermenting a lager we highly recommend doing large yeast starters to ensure the tastiness of your brew.
Features: Made from borosilicate science glass. Perfect for heating up DME for yeast starters. Suitable for use with gas stove top (not electric stoves).
Technical data: Capacity: 5000ml. Dimensions: L×W×H×Opening (mm): 220×220×370×45. Material: Borosilicate glass.
⚠️ Important: Though borosilicate glass has excellent thermal shock resistance, it must be handled with care. Cool all glassware slowly to prevent breakage. Do not take boiled flask directly from stovetop into ice water - allow to cool for a few minutes first. Do not boil flasks dry or heat above 140°C. Do not heat glassware that is etched, cracked, chipped, nicked, or scratched. Do not heat directly on electrical heating elements. All borosilicate glass will eventually break after a number of heat/cool cycles.

Frequently asked questions about this product
Why is this flask suitable for yeast starters but only on a gas stovetop?
It is made from borosilicate science glass, which tolerates the direct heat needed to boil DME (dried malt extract) for a yeast starter. It is rated for gas stove tops only — not electric stoves or electric heating elements, where concentrated contact heat can crack the glass. Pair it with a stir plate to keep the starter aerated and the yeast in suspension.
How should the flask be heated and cooled to avoid breakage?
Although borosilicate glass resists thermal shock well, temperature changes must be gradual. Never move a boiled flask straight into ice water — let it cool for a few minutes first. Do not boil the flask dry and do not heat it above 140°C. Cooling all glassware slowly is the most important habit for long service life.
When should the flask be taken out of service?
Never heat glassware that is etched, cracked, chipped, nicked or scratched, because these flaws concentrate stress and cause sudden failure under heat. Inspect the flask before every use. All borosilicate glass eventually breaks after many heat/cool cycles, so treat it as an item that is replaced over time.
Why use a yeast starter instead of pitching yeast directly?
A starter grows a larger, healthier yeast population before it enters the wort, avoiding the off-flavours caused by under-pitching stressed yeast. It is especially recommended for lagers, which need a high cell count to ferment cleanly. The 5000ml volume is sized for the large starters that high-gravity and lager fermentations require.
