What does flat sealing BSPP mean for how I should seal the joint?
BSPP is a parallel (straight) thread, so it does not seal on the threads themselves the way a tapered thread does. A flat-sealing nipple seals against a flat face, so the joint is made tight with a suitable flat gasket or bonded washer at the sealing face rather than by wrapping tape around the threads.
Why does this nipple have a hexagonal section in the middle?
The hex section gives a spanner or wrench a flat grip so you can tighten the nipple securely without distorting the threads or the pipe. It lets you apply controlled torque against the sealing face, which matters for a flat-sealing connection.
It is 2 inch on one end and 1 1/2 inch on the other, so how is it used?
It is a male-to-male reducing nipple, so it joins two female-threaded ports of different sizes, adapting a 2 inch BSPP port down to 1 1/2 inch BSPP. It is useful where you need to connect components or hoses that have different female thread sizes.
