Frequently asked questions about 2183
What wines is this French oak barrel suitable for?
French oak is particularly suitable for full-bodied red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. This gives the wine an elegant note of vanilla, spice and brown sugar and supports a refined tannic structure. The 10L size is ideal for small batches and home wine production.
How to prepare a new barrel before first use?
Fill a new barrel with tartaric acid solution (10g per liter of water) and let it stand for 4-5 days. It seals the wood and removes excess tannins. After emptying, disinfect with a sulfur strip before pouring the wine. Proper preparation ensures a clean aroma and extends the life of the barrel.
How long should wine be aged in a barrel?
The recommended aging time is 12-18 months, depending on the wine style and the desired oak effect. Smaller barrels such as 10L will impart flavor more quickly due to the higher surface area to volume ratio, so monitor the aromas regularly to avoid too much oak flavor.
How to store the barrel when not in use?
Keep the barrel in a moist and cool place (70% humidity, 12-17°C). Seal with a wooden or silicone plug and repeat the disinfection with a sulfur strip every 3 months to prevent mold and maintain the integrity of the wood.
Can this barrel be used to make vinegar?
Yes, an unroasted French oak barrel is an excellent choice for aging vinegar. Unroasted wood allows for controlled oxygen exchange without adding roasted aromas, producing a clean and balanced vinegar with a delicate oak flavor.
