How to choose the right pump?
The wrong pump can ruin an entire batch — an overly aggressive flow froths your wine, while an underpowered motor stalls on thick honey. This guide covers our complete pump range: impeller, screw, lobe and centrifugal pumps, air-operated pumps for alcohol and powders, and ATEX explosion-proof solutions. Choose in three steps: flow rate, pump type and connections.
Choose the flow rate by batch size
Rule of thumb: divide your batch volume by the time you can reasonably spend pumping, then pick one size up — volumes grow faster than you think.
Choose the pump type by task
Viscosity — the thickness of a liquid — is the first key figure (water is ~1 cP), but the task matters just as much: are you moving delicate wine, chunky preserves, hot cleaning solution or flammable spirits? Each type is a master of its own field.
Impeller pumps
The universal first choice for beverages. Self-priming (4–6 m), handles up to 50,000 cP — from juice and wine to honey and tomato paste. Bypass-valve models pump gently with minimal frothing. Liverani EP withstands up to +95 °C, Rover Novax +95 °C.
Screw and gear pumps
Rotary positive-displacement pumps: pulsation-free steady flow prevents emulsification and oxidation. A screw pump is best for viscous and pulpy masses (up to 100,000 cP) — even whole fruit passes through undamaged. A gear pump (e.g. Rover Novax G) suits oil and other smooth viscous liquids.
Lobe pumps
The gentlest choice for thick products: honey, creams and chunky products keep their structure. EPDM-coated rotors, electronic speed regulator 0–450 rpm.
Centrifugal pumps
The workhorse for large volumes of low-viscosity liquids (wine, juice, water). Up to 30,000 l/h; sanitary AISI 316 with quick-release clamps — easy to open and clean; precise regulation with a bypass valve.
Air-operated & diaphragm pumps
Compressed-air drive is spark-free and versatile: pumps both liquids and powders, and suits flammable liquids such as alcohol. Head up to 70 m; on beer lines it delivers from keg to tap up to 10 floors.
ATEX explosion-proof
Certified for explosive atmospheres: spirits, strong alcoholic beverages, flammable vapours. The range includes air-operated (Phoenix Atex P18), screw (P30 TF ATEX, LUTZ MD1) and light-duty pumps (Kegland, tested up to 10% ethanol).

What is the difference between an impeller pump and a liquid-ring pump?
An impeller pump handles liquids up to 50,000 cP, a liquid-ring pump only up to 120 cP — for thick liquids (honey, syrup, purée) choose an impeller pump or an even more capable screw pump.
Which pump should I use for alcohol and strong beverages?
For flammable liquids choose an air-operated pump (spark-free drive, e.g. Phoenix P30) or an ATEX-certified model (Phoenix Atex P18, P30 TF ATEX). For lighter jobs the Kegland siphon pump is tested up to 10% ethanol.
Which pump suits honey, purées and chunky products?
A screw pump (up to 100,000 cP, pulsation-free — handles pulpy masses and even whole fruit) or a lobe pump (gentlest, 0–450 rpm — honey and creams keep their structure).
Are impeller pumps self-priming?
